Electrical Requirements for Swimming Pools

Following your state’s code requirements from National Electric Code is vital. Each state may have little differences in their code. It also changes every three years or so.

Changes are often gradual and minimal. But before you install your pool, make sure to check the current NEC.

Here are some of the most common codes:

Overhead Lines

Utility power lines should be 22.5 feet above the water line. Meanwhile, communication lines should be at least 10 feet above. If possible, install your pool away from any electrical lines to be safe.

These heights are required not only to avoid water reaching the lines. It’s also to avoid cleaning nets that can reach these lines.

Electrical Outlet Receptacles

Pump and motor receptacles should be located between six and 10 meters away from the pool wall. These should be GCFI protected and locked.

At least one GFCI convenience outlet must be within six to 20 feet of the pool. Any other receptacle that has no GFCI protection should be 20 feet from the pool. Place protected receptacles at least six feet from the pool.

Underground Wiring

Underground wiring should be located at least five feet away from the pool wall. Wiring below the pool itself is not allowed.
